Caravelas
Where it all began...

A cove facing the open sea, with large waves and lush vegetation. Ideal for diving. Near the rocks you can see turtles, which are no longer found at the other beaches. It was here that the « Instituto Mata Atlántica « (Atlantic Forest Institute) was founded, creating an important conservation area.

History

The beach is named after the first ships to arrive in the area. Here Americo Vespucio led the first expedition to this part of the coast. The beach was used as a landing place for troops, and as a storaage port. It was from here, also, that Aleixo Garcia (Vespucio’s navigator) embarked for Perú on a magical journey, where he found gold mines and precious stones, but that’s another story...

How to Get There:

Caravelas is on the highway which links Búzios and Cabo Frio. Just after the Praia de José Gonçalves, it is 8 Km. from the Tourist Office at the entrance to Búzios. Follow signs to Búzios Megaresort.
